Description:
Abstract:
Ecoregion boundaries for the eastern United States, with extension into Canada for NAP and STL ecoregions. TNC Eastern Conservation Science based the boundaries on USFS Ecological Units of the Eastern United States 1st Approximation (Keys et al. 1995) subsections, Natural Heritage Program data, and ecoregions and subregions of Canada's provincial Ecological Land Classifications.
Purpose:
Ecoregions are areas of land and water defined by similar geology, landforms, climate, vegetation and ecological processes. Ecoregions are used by The Nature Conservancy as the appropriate large-scale regional planning units for geographic stratification of terrestrial biodiversity conservation analyses.

Process_Description:
The source USFS Ecological Units of the Eastern United States 1st Approximation (Keys et al. 1995) subsections were used to create revised ecoregions by TNC. In some cases, subsections were moved from one source USFS ecoreigon into an ecoregion deamed more appropriate ecologically based on Natural Heritage Program data and consultation with Natural Heritage Program scientists. Ecoregion linwork in Canada were taken from the ecoregions and ecodistricts in provincial Ecological Land Classifications for Nova Scotia (Neily et al, 2003) and New Brunswick (Ecosystem Classification Working Group, 2003);region naturelles in Quebec (Li and Ducruc, 1999); and The National Ecological Framework (ESWG, 1996) in Prince Edward Island and Îles -de-la-Madeleine. Scales of these Canadian data sources varied from 1:100,000-1:1,000,000.
