Description:
Abstract:
This portfolio represents the priority aquatic systems that emerged from the Eastern Region Ecoregional Portfolio Assessments as of 5/4/2006 These features were the result of a scientific analysis to identify viable examples of each small (size 2), medium (size 3), and large (size 4) river system type within the ecoregion. Although a few headwater and small coastal stream (size 1) examples did emerge in this analysis, headwater streams were not comprehensively addressed in this analysis to date.
Purpose:
The aquatic portion of the TNC ecoregional planning process involves the following key steps:1. Identify conservation targets across all scales (aquatic species to ecosystems); 2. Map examples of those targets; 3. Assess viability of the targets; 4. Set numeric and viability conservation goals for targets (e.g., how many populations do we need to protect to ensure survival, what qualifies as a viable example); 5. Hold expert meetings to obtain external review and input on all the above steps; 6. Select and design a portfolio of conservation sites. This final datalayer of aquatic portfolio rivers as of 5-4-2006 represents the results of the above steps for aquatic system level targets. The portfolio is designed to meet both representation and connectivity goals. The Portfolio Code for each segment includes both a "priority" prefix and "connectivity" suffix. PREFIXES: S1 = priority 1, best/very good example of system type; S2 = Priority 2, good but not best/very good example of system type, alternative portfolio site; Sx = not very good or good quality example, but necessary for connectivity network. SUFFIXES: r = site is best of its type but poor current condition make it a restoration site, c = part of priority connectivity network. Please see the full Ecoregional Planning reports for more information on the Aquatic Classification, Goals, and Assembly process.
