Meet Alice Chamberlin—2C1Forest’s new Executive Director Alice lives in Warner, New Hampshire, where she has raised three children, now young adults, with her husband Steve. Whether hiking, skiing or kayaking, she loves being out on the land. She has devoted much of her life to conservation and environmental protection. She and Steve live on an old farm that was subdivided into six acre lots in 1989. They have reassembled nearly 100 acres of the original farm and saved important agricultural lands and views from development. Alice brings an impressive wealth of knowledge and experience to the Executive Director’s job. A jurist doctorate earned from the Franklin Pierce Law Center has given her a solid foundation in land use and environmental law, and prepared her for past work at the Antioch New England Graduate School (Adjunct Faculty), the Environmental Law Clinic at Franklin Pierce and as a policy advisor to the late Governor Hugh Gallen. Alice has served as a Commissioner to the International Joint Commission (IJC), United States and Canada. At the IJC, she came to understand the loss of biological diversity as a major international environmental challenge that could only be addressed by collaborative, transboundary initiatives such as Two Countries, One Forest. She has served as a trustee for the New Hampshire Chapter of the Nature Conservancy and as a member of her local Conservation Commission and regional land trust. In her most recent position, Alice served as New Hampshire Governor Lynch’s Policy Assistant for natural resources, energy and transportation. In that role, she helped design and implement key policy initiatives requiring leadership, strategic analysis, planning and diplomacy. She was appointed by Governor Lynch to the New Hampshire Climate Change Task Force. Alice is committed to building partnerships among a diverse array of citizens and policymakers. We are delighted to have Alice bring these experiences and qualities to 2C1Forest. Alice begins work for 2C1Forest on September 15th and all signs point to her hitting the ground running. She is excited about visiting the farthest corners of the Northern Appalachian ecoregion and learning about the conservation challenges we face. Most importantly, she is looking forward to meeting and working with her new Canadian and U.S. partners. In Alice’s own words: “ I am excited to have this opportunity to work on landscape scale conservation in the Northern Appalachians. Two Countries, One Forest is working with partners on the ground to protect forests, build resilient communities and support local and regional initiatives. I am honoured to be its new Executive Director.” Please extend a warm welcome to Alice and be sure to let her know if you would like to meet or talk with her.
